Polica premieres new video; Jay-Z approves

Those of us who have been paying attention to Poliça's unbelievably swift rise shouldn't have been surprised that their debut music video for "Lay Your Cards Out" would be as gorgeous as it is. Nor should we be surprised that Jay-Z approves, as he posted the video on his "Life+Times" blog today, simply stating, "The first tease of more to come; Poliça gives you the “Lay Your Cards Out” video debut; soft and smoky hypnosis of a girl, a beat and a black curtain."

Local director's video for Kathleen Edwards premieres

The music video for Kathleen Edwards' "Change the Sheets" premiered today, and it comes courtesy of prolific local director Dan Huiting. Huiting's the man behind City of Music (which recently partnered with Pitchfork) and was also a major contributor to the Time.com-lauded video version of Bon Iver's self-titled album. (The sort-of local connection: Edwards is Justin Vernon of Bon Iver's girlfriend.) Bonus: Erik Hess, a super talented local photographer, also helped shoot some of the time lapses in the video.

Video: Cloak Ox's "Prison"

The Cloak Ox's new video for "Prison" directed, filmed and edited by Isaac Gale just debuted online for the first time, and it's been making the rounds on social media channels (though if you were at the video premiere party on August 27 at CO Exhibitions, you would've already seen it). It's the first video from the new project from Andrew Broder, Martin Dosh, Jeremy Ylvisaker, and Mark Erickson, who will release their debut EP Prisen at a release party on September 30 at Loring Theater.

Music Video Thursday: New videos released by Low, Bon Iver, Mason Jennings

It's Music Video Thursday apparently, because there are not one, not two, but THREE new local music videos floating around the Twitterverse today. Yesterday, Pitchfork posted the new music video by Duluth slowcore band Low for "Especially Me," off their latest release C'Mon, in which singer/drummer Mimi Parker takes a ride on the NYC subway system in fast-forward:



(They also just announced a tour with international and national dates, as well as two sorta-local shows: September 3 at the Masonic Temple in Winona, and October 14 at Duluth's Marshall High School Auditorium.)

Also out today is Bon Iver's latest video from Bon Iver, Bon Iver, "Holocene." It's directed by Nabil Elderkin (who's worked with Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and Common) and was shot within Iceland's glacial landscapes. In a nod to nature, the video premiered on National Geographic's website:

And just a moment ago, Paste Magazine debuted a new music video by local folkie Mason Jennings, "Bitter Heart," directed by Andre Durand, who has also made videos for Bon Iver and Tapes ‘N’ Tapes. For the next several Thursdays, Paste will be premiering a new video from his forthcoming Minnesota LP. The video is nonembeddable, so you'll have to head over to the Paste Magazine site to check it out.

Video: Tay Zonday performs "My Way" at karaoke

Here's a little dose of weird to get you through the afternoon: Tay Zonday performing Frank Sinatra's "My Way" at Barney's Beanery karaoke in Hollywood last night. "Who?" you ask? You should remember the then-University of Minnesota grad student's Internet hit "Chocolate Rain" back in 2007. Since then, the baritone-voiced singer did a promo video for Dr Pepper called "Cherry Chocolate Rain," and not much else. Seems his 15 minutes of Internet fame are up.

Video: New local cover band Spearz covers Britney

How have we not caught onto this until now? A new local cover band, Spearz, that plays only Britney Spears covers has released a video for their cover of "I'm a Slave 4 U," and it's pretty awesome. It's kitschy and ironic, sure, but it's also GOOD. It helps that it's fronted by the honey-voiced, oh-so-cute prosthelytizing Moonstone frontman Micah Mackert, with some other familiar faces like Neil Zumwalde of ZibraZibra fame. You can catch the band on Sunday night at Honey. Check it out:
