#snowmageddon Part Deux

At some point in time, all of us have used one term or another to describe the horrible Minnesota weather, but #snowmageddon must be the most prominent one and the one that is having an unexpected revival. Local Twitterers Greg Swan and Doug Hamlin created the hashtag in 2008 in order to track the conversations surrounding the big winter storm that was about to hit Minneapolis. The hashatag came back several months ago and it was actually a subject of one of the first ever LOL/OMG posts .

Swan must have scratched his head when he saw the hashtag became a part of national news headlines this weekend. To make things even weirder, the person responsible for promoting it is President Obama himself! Makes sense - this is what his house looks like at the moment.

It is safe to assume that Obama was unaware of the existence of the hashtag, although as a native of Chicago he has seen a few snow storms in his lifetime. So, should we let him have it? Here's a fact: The Mid-Atlantic states are being hit by the the biggest winter storm in nearly 90 years, which is kind of a big deal for those unaccustomed to harsh weather conditions. So, yes, he can have it.

Amazing! The "snowman of the year" award almost went to Marshman, but this is even cooler! Does anybody know who made it? The Twin Cities needs more snow gorillas, if you ask us.

She wears your tee

Sometimes all you need is a little creativity. And a pretty face. And nice body. Well, a certain ex-Minneapolite has it all and is using it to the fullest. Model Tanaya Henry who recently moved to New York is already stirring things up with various projects as well as (rumored) personal relationships. (It must be noted that Tanaya is BFF's with Coco and Breezy, the already famous designer/model twins from Minneapolis who are also having a great time in the Big Apple.)

A quick research reveals that Tanaya scored several music videos (with Kid Cudi, Chris Brown, to name a few) and a date with hip-hop ingenue Drake, although gossip blogs report that he's dating another girl at the same time. Drama! Tanaya, however, has no time for petty gossip - she is too busy working on not one, but two projects. Her line of accessories, Lace, is already popular among celebrities - Rihanna and Alicia Keys were both seen wearing pieces from the collection.

But what got Tanaya national, as well as local attention is her other business: She Wears Your Tee. The concept is simple: buy a date on her calendar and she will wear your company t-shirt for the day, as the photo below illustrates.



Tanaya has already scored some big names, like Element Six Media and Hootsuite, and if you browse through her recent "clients", you will also see familiar local names such as Atmosphere and GoGirl. This relatively simple and affordable business concept sounds genius - except for the fact that Tanaya didn't come up with it herself. Two buddies, Evan White and Jason Sadler started I Wear Your Shirt in 2008 and the two sites have many obvious similarities. We inquired with @Kareemy, the man behind the MSPTweetup who is helping Tanaya with marketing efforts and he informed us that those two sites are not related. He added that "the concept is loosely based on (I Wear Your Shirt) but she is a professional model, they are just dudes." Agreed. We are sure we speak for all of us when we say that anybody would rather see their logo on a beautiful girl then some dork. (Sorry dudes!)

Today's link of the day comes as a courtesy of @caerickson/@lifterbaron who shared the news that Miley Cyrus's 9-year-old sister Noah is launching a lingerie line for kids. OMG.

We don't even know where to begin with this story. First of all, why is her name Noah? Secondly, does she have parents? I mean, this child has been seen wearing dominatrix clothes, dancing on a stripper pole, singing songs with inappropriate lyrics and now this? A CNBC reporter, who was equally amazed as we are, summed it up really well: " I didn't even know children wore lingerie. I thought they wore pajamas."

Exactly.

MN at the Oscars

Ah, it's Oscars time again! Nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards were announced today and the general opinion is that it is the most satisfying list of nominees in a long time. There is literally something for everybody, especially now that the Best Picture category has been expanded to 10 nominees. ( OK, Avatar maybe didn't deserve 9 noms, but that doesn't mean anything, right?) Before you go and make a decision who you want to route for, check out the MN Film TV Twiter updates form this morning.

Apparently, several Oscar front-runners share a Minnesota connection!

Walter Kirn (who spent most of his childhood in Taylors Falls and Marine on St. Croix) wrote the book "Up in The Air" in 2001. Movie adaptation, directed by Jason Reitman received 6 nominations, all in major categories such as Best Picture and Best Director.


Congratulations indeed! Docter definitely has something to be proud of: "Up" 's Best Picture nod for an animated film is the first since Beauty and the Beast in 1991! Pixar's latest hit received 5 nominations.

This movie IS Minnesota! The Coen Brothers shot "A Serious Man" in the Twin Cities metro area in the fall of 2008. The production employed over 130 Minnesota crew members, numerous Minnesota actors and hundreds of extras.

Fingers crossed for Minnesota at the Oscars!

Locally-based artist co-op the XYandZ Gallery has thrown their hat into the ring for the Pepsi Great Idea Contest! Each month, the soft drink giant plans to give away $1,300,000 in grants to artists and dreamers. In other words, peeps with great ideas!

XYandZ has proposed a big public art project to transform vacant buildings in the Twin Cities into art installations. They are going for a $50,000 grant for the project. VOTE HERE to move them up in the rankings! They are hover around #100 right now, but with your help we can push them up and beautify the Twin Cities at the same time!

PRINCE IS NOW ON TWITTER

AS SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED (in all caps no less) THAT PRINCE IS NOW ON TWITTER.

We speculate that the majority of loud "ADD PRINCE! RETWEET! I NEED MY FANS SUPPORT" updates coming from @PRINCE_OFFICIAL are the work of a marketing minion. The demanding tweets are peppered in with normal, lowercase, more Prince-like musings such as "I've never known a musician who regretted being one. Whatever deceptions life may have in store, music itself is not going to let you down." and "All the sounds of the earth are like music."

Hopefully after he has enough followers (could Prince ever have enough followers?) The yelling will stop and we'll get to enjoy some interesting insight into the purple one's daily life.

UPDATE: Peeps are speculating that this acct may be a fake! 1. He's not "verified" and 2. it links to a fan site, not to his real site (a subscription site). Hassertime notes in our comments section that it sometimes takes awhile for them to get verified, but we're kind of skeptz anyway!

UPDATE 2: Gimme Noise reports that the @PRINCE_OFFICIAL is indeed a fake...and probably run from a basement by someone named "Barry."
