MIA curators answer your questions online

Ever wanted your pressing questions about art answered by a high-falutin' curator from a major museum? Well, today is that day. From 1-3pm the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' curators will be online and answering your questions as posted on the museum's Facebook wall. The q&a sesh is inspired by last year's "Ask a Curator Day" on Twitter, during which 360+ curators from museums the world over spent the day answering questions via the social networking site. Cool, eh?

The MIA cites examples of possible questions such as: What is your favorite 'back story' about a masterwork at the MIA? What advice would you give college students who aspire to be curators? What’s your favorite work of art at the MIA, or in the world? And so on and so forth. Ask away!

Monster Drawing Rally returns this weekend

One of our favorite arts fundraising events of the year returns to Midway Contemporary Art this Saturday night! 50 local artists are set to create original works - live - while collectors and art lovers hover anxiously, trying to snare coveted pieces by their favorites before someone else gets to them first (for a mere $35 a pop, no less). The competition is often fierce but it's worth it - scoring sweet deals on works by top notch locals is the perfect way to start or add to your art collection. Not to mention, your moola goes to help support a local gallery. Win-win!

Artist Rob McBroom shared his plans for the Rally on Facebook. Each of these little "monsters" will be recreated on cardboard with McBroom's signature glitter, rhinestones, wing-dings, hoo-haws, and miscellany. Rob will be drawing in the last quadrant of the Rally, after 8pm.

We are beyond obsessed!

The gorgeous new music video for Dearling Physique's "Discipline Your Hands" has been leaked! Set to debut tonight at the Uptown Apple Store, the video was sent out by the group's PR peeps, eventually finding its way on to the general interwebs.

Frontman Domino Davis just posted a note on Dearling Physique's Facebook page saying "The cat is out of the bag!" with a link to the Ansel Wallenfang-directed vid. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't hop down to the Apple Store tonight at 7pm to see it on the big screen, meet Dom and his crew, and see some of the seriously brilliant costuming by Kevin Kramp.

No more Maneater?

Food/sex bloggess Erica Rivera a.k.a. "Maneater" has been majorly rufflin' feathers of local scenesters with her juicy, TMI blog posts over the past year - many of which thinly veil their sometimes well-known subjects. However, it seems the naughty scribe is turning over a new leaf in 2011, partially due to a change in relationship status!

Rivera claims she's leaving her controversial persona behind "for the time being" to concentrate on a new blog entitled Yummy Luv. According to the former Maneater the new blog will be "more food focused, inspired by the grub my honey and I have made together (aww)."

So, ladies and gents, breathe easy, your debaucherous activities will remain off the interwebz..."for the time being!"

Unreleased MPLS punk documentary to play on MTN

Way cool! Longtime punk scene staple and Drinking with Ian co-conspirator Ollie Stench has worked some magic to bring the long-buried '90s music doc When We Play for Real to local cable access.

Stench says via his Facebook event:

"In the late 90's film maker Patti Rhodes chronicled the Minneapolis punk scene in her documentary "When We Play For Real". This was never officially released, but now with Patti's OK I have submitted it to Mpls cable access."

An insider's tour of the '90s punk scene, Rhodes' documentary takes you on a nostalgic tour of the good ol' days, complete with spiked hair, pierced noses and hardcore tuneage. The film will air four times in January on MTN Channel 17:

Tuesday 1/4 at Midnight
Friday 1/7 at 1:30am
Saturday 1/15 at Midnight
Wednesday 1/29 at 3:30am.

Turf Club changing management

We've got the scoop (thanks to Gimme Noise) on Saturday's cancellation of the Marijuana Deathsquads show and the impromptu closing of the Turf Club. Mere hours before the doors were to open Saturday, a sign was placed on the window that stated "Closed for Repairs" and Deathsquads honcho Ryan Olson posted on Facebook that the show was canceled. Fishy, right?

Speculations raged, but on Sunday word came from Turf Club owner Tom Scanlon that the bar is simply changing management. 15-year Turf staffer and ousted manager Dave Wiegardt was integral in turning the divey Midway club from a bland blue collar watering hole into one of the epic mainstays of the Twin Cities music scene. Reasons behind his departure were not released. Taking the reigns as of January 11th is Josh James, a veteran Turf employee.

According to the press release, "New hours of operation and a new direction will be the hallmarks of the re-working of the venerable jewel of the midway," and "Focus on local music will remain the cornerstone of the business."

We don't like the words "new direction" when it comes to something as classic and iconic as the Turf, but be won't get our pitchforks and torches out quite yet. The fact that the new manager is an internal hire is absolutely a good thing, so we're trying not to get our Turf-lovin' panties in a bunch.

Word has it that the Turf Club will re-open as of January 11th. Re-booking of displaced shows in the interim is currently being hashed out - most notably, next Saturday's MC/VL goodbye show.

Local musician robbed on Christmas!

Definitely not LOL, but certainly OMG, today's Christmas news is certainly disheartening. Eric Lovold of local band The Alarmists posted some bad news on Facebook early Christmas morning. Lovold returned to his St. Paul home and studio to find it robbed and looted. Many items were stolen, but most disturbingly, the veteran musician's Mac Pro, which contained two completed albums that were almost ready to be mastered. The police were called, prints dusted for, etc - hopefully the computer and Eric's other belongings will turn up! Anyone with any info is of course encouraged to call the po-po.


Tonight at 10pm, the musician is slated to be on Kare 11 news talking about the loss of the music and the robbery.

LOL of the Day

Musician Adam Levy discovered a pretty hilarious YouTube vid this afternoon that features none other than local DJ, Danny Sigelman participating on a Chinese television show called Lifetime Laboratory. Sigelman, who spent a good part of 2009 working as a radio DJ in China, is challenged to do a morning routine that includes brushing his teeth, making breakfast, putting on a suit, playing a drum and drawing a portrait...yeah, we don't get it either. The best part? Danny wears a 331 Club t-shirt the whole time!

Solid Gold and Naughty By Nature?

You wish! We definitely LOL'ed at this flier Solid Gold posted on Facebook today. The font used to announce the opening act "Sold Gold" is even slightly similar to a typeface often used by the band. We have to admit, first glance had us saying "WTF!"

Unfortunately, this is a bill that we'll likely never see, but on opposite day we'd be first in line for tix!

UPDATE: We got official confirmation from a Solid Gold insider that despite the flier typo, this is REAL. The music blog Daytrotter is based out of the quad cities. Solid Gold apparently did a set for them a year ago or so, and they were offered this benefit. Random...and hilar...AND AWESOME! We'll need pix, boys!

Our favorite hometown twins have been taking NYC by storm this year with their heavy metal line of sunglasses (and their sparkling personalities). We knew it was only a matter of time before the girls got some super serious exposure. Whilst perusing Facebook this morning we came across a delightful post from the twinsies. Vogue? Yep. Vogue.

OMG! This is going to be E-P-I-C.

Someone call the fashion police!

Local fashion designer Samantha Rei of Blasphemina's Closet took to Facebook today with an important APB. Apparently, some jerk stole one of Samantha's painstakingly handmade dresses after a recent fashion show at MCAD. Rei says via Facebook:

"I am hurt and saddened to say another of my items from Schoolgirls and Mobilesuits (SGMS) has turned up missing. I'd offer a reward but I'm just barely scraping by on what I make off of my business. If anyone has any information, please let me know. I have the underskirt, but not the over dress. This is my entire source of income you guys. I'm not rich, I'm not famous. I work hard. Please help me out. Please repost."

There's not much we find more despicable than stealing from artists! If you see someone wearing this super noticeable, one-of-a-kind frock, be sure to contact Samantha with the who/what/when/wheres of the situation!

Another Local Super Group?

While our friends Gayngs are busy touring the US and performing on Late Night TV, another local super group was just announced. It all started on Facebook, of course. A page was created under the name "Guitar Party" with this description :

"we are a new group out of minneapolis. you may have seen our members play in such groups as halloween alaska, andrew bird, why?, dosh, alpha consumer, fog, heatdeath, mpls. dub ensemble, eyedea and abilities, gayngz, etc.. our singer is a first grader at hale elementary."

Not bad, huh? The group already made 170 friends and they also announced their first show should be happening this week. Where, we don't know but keep an eye out on their Facebook page for more details.

Now, please, will somebody make a painting of these guys in a hot tub? Thanks.

GAYNGS on Jimmy Fallon tonight

Local supergroup, GAYNGS, will be rockin' Jimmy Fallon tonight (channel 11 at 11:30pm). Keep your eyes peeled for local civilians Robyn Lewis, Andrea Swensson, Ben Clark and others to be boppin' around behind the band as they play. Tune in or be square!

The new Stasiu's

As of October 15th, Northeast will have a new live music venue/bar/restaurant! Taking over the old Stasiu's location is Stanley's Bar Room, a brighter, shinier spot that will provide upscale bar food, 32 beers on tap (including a slew of craft beers), and live music. To keep things consistent (and awesome) the new owners have retained former Stasiu's booker, Christy Hunt (of Pink Mink, Ouija Radio) to continue the rock n' roll tradition at the intersection of Lowry & University. We can't wait to check it out!
