MTV hearts Solid Gold

Though local darlings Solid Gold have been pretty quiet for the past year, they've been hard at work on a new album and playing the occasional live show. Despite the lack of activity, MTV has featured the band on their "Bands We Like" blog. The reviewer writes: "I was lucky enough to see them perform a batch of new tunes live recently, and one song was notably much louder and aggressive than their previous efforts (in the best way possible). Having heard these new tunes, I predict this new effort from them could be my 'Album of the Year.'" We think so, too.

GAYNGS Tweet their West Coast mini-tour, compare pool size

Local supergroup GAYNGS has hit the road for a mini, weeklong West Coast tour, hitting Portland, San Francisco, L.A., and the Sasquatch Music Festival in Quincy, Washington. And what could be more important while on tour than the hotel swimming pool?

The Jah-Hawks live at First Avenue's Best New Bands

We just came across this video by musician/DJ Danny Sigelman of The Jah-Hawks (a new dub-step project covering the songs of The Jayhawks) performing their three-song set ("Blue," "Waiting For The Sun" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me") at Wednesday's Best New Bands showcase at First Avenue. The band features Zach Coulter of Solid Gold on vocals, plus Jacob Hanson of Halloween, Alaska, J.T. Bates of Fat Kid Wednesdays fame, and James Buckley.

Solid Gold provides soundtrack to river revitalization project

Now, this is cool: Our favorite resident electro rockers Solid Gold has provided the soundtrack for this video from TLS/KVA for a municipal revitalization and beautification project along Old Man River in Minneapolis for the Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition. We knew they were talented, but we had no idea they were such do-gooders. Check it out, the video not only sounds great but it's highly informative.

Solid Gold and Naughty by Nature: The collaboration

So we thought it was pretty hilar/awesome when we first caught wind of Solid Gold opening for Naughty by Nature at a Daytrotter benefit concert last weekend. But it's gotten better - while they were in town, Daytrotter recorded a collaboration between the two groups. Yes, our minds are blown, too.

Solid Gold and Naughty By Nature?

You wish! We definitely LOL'ed at this flier Solid Gold posted on Facebook today. The font used to announce the opening act "Sold Gold" is even slightly similar to a typeface often used by the band. We have to admit, first glance had us saying "WTF!"

Unfortunately, this is a bill that we'll likely never see, but on opposite day we'd be first in line for tix!

UPDATE: We got official confirmation from a Solid Gold insider that despite the flier typo, this is REAL. The music blog Daytrotter is based out of the quad cities. Solid Gold apparently did a set for them a year ago or so, and they were offered this benefit. Random...and hilar...AND AWESOME! We'll need pix, boys!

Solid Gold preview experimental set for City of Music

As we previewed earlier this month, Solid Gold performed on Mpls.TV and Gimme Noise's City of Music series. The unusual performance has been released, and features a stripped-down lineup of Matt Locher, Zachary Coulter and Adam Hurlburt wearing black feather masks performing experimental versions of songs from 2009's Bodies of Water release. Solid Gold to be featured in Mpls.TV's "City of Music"

This just in via the @MPLSTV Twitter feed: Solid Gold are the next band to be featured in the Mpls.TV's "City of Music" project. Looks like an abbreviated lineup of the band (Matt Locher, Zachary Coulter and Adam Hurlburt) are rockin' some wacky futuristic gear in the uploaded Twitpic - no doubt with lighting help from their resident lighting guru, Bryant Locher.


Previous "City of Music" performances have featured Hildur Victoria, Eyedea & Abilities, and Lookbook.

The Weisman announced via Facebook the special guests for the next edition of the popular late night WAMplified art/music series: none other than local hometown heroes, Solid Gold! But before you say "I've seen SG five times already this year!" factor this into the equation: rumor has it that the boys will be testing out alternative compositions that you wont get a taste of at any other Solid Gold show!

Tickets for this cool event held within the amazing confines of the Frank Gehry designed Weisman -- one of our fave artsy landmarks in town -- will surely sell out quickly. Go to MTV Iggy, scroll down, go to row 5. Who's that boy? Yes, it's Zach from Solid Gold! Iggy, MTV's global music and pop culture network, has just released their " totally subjective" list of 25 Best New Bands In The World:

Solid Gold to host MTV2's 'Subterranean' this Sunday

We heard a great bit of gossip about MPLS' home-bred electroteers, Solid Gold straight from the mouth of 89.3 The Current DJ, Bill DeVille, this morning. It seems even the music officials at MTV can't seem to escape the charm the boys possess. Not even two weeks since their “Matter of Time” video premiere, MTV2 has summoned the band back to guest host this weekend's edition of the insomniac alt-staple, Subterranean - a weekly music show featuring videos and interview segments from indie and underground artists. Stay up late with the dance-rock members as they spin the hottest videos in indie culture – including new ones from Julian Casablancas, Hot Chip, Spoon – and, of course, chat about their own vid. The episode airs locally at 1am Sunday night – aka Monday morning.

Solid Gold debuts on MTV!

Local faves, Solid Gold, made their big debut on MTV on Tuesday! The new video for the soon-to-be-mega-hit "Matter of Time" is a colorful masterpiece, with an epic lighting concept created by SG cohort Bryant Locher. We LOVE!!!

Word has it via a recently created Facebook event that Solid Gold's video for their single "Matter Of Time" will make its debut on MTV2 and MTVU on February 16th. Be sure to tune in to check our hometown boys out!

Solid Gold written up in Pitchfork

OMG! Even as they manage to sell out the First Avenue Mainroom, local electro-pop band Solid Gold finally gets the long-deserved Pitchfork treatment. It's for the band's just-released "Matter of Time" single, and it probably helps that it was released on hipster Brooklyn-based Green Label Sound and that one of its remixes comes courtesy of rising Brooklyn duo Tanlines.

Golden Boys

Everybody's favorite local radio station, The Current, made a big announcement this morning: "We're proud to announce the line-up of our fifth anniversary party happening on January 29 at First Avenue. Members will get an early chance to get tickets to see Solid Gold, P.O.S., Mason Jennings, Lookbook, and Twilight Hours." We were excited to see a few of our local favorites on the same rooster, which was a general opinion on Twitter this morning. However, @solace (AKA Kyle Matteson from More Cowbell) raised a legit concern:

Behind the scenes at Solid Gold's video shoot

Someone just posted a behind-the-scenes video clip from Solid Gold's video shoot for "Matter of Time" last weekend in Madison posted on facebook.


Judging from this outtake featuring Coulter in a lo-fi spacesuit, the video probably will look like something from Flight of the Conchords. Fortunately (unfortunately?) there is nothing porn-like to be found in the vid or pix, despite Steve Marsh's earlier claim via facebook. Click here for more behind-the-scenes photos on facebook.

Solid Gold makes a new, um, video?

@stephenhero just posted a Facebook status update that made us LOL:

Further research uncovered that it is unfortunately NOT a "porn video" but a new music video for hot Solid Gold track "Matter of Time." According to Solid Gold lighting guru Bryant Locher's blog Bluefuture Design, the band is headed to Madison today to start shooting the new video.

Says Locher, "The lighting for the new solid gold video is going to be done by me. This shit's going to be cool, I am having second thoughts about not getting a smoke machine, but that can make continuity and editing a real bitch. This is going to be really fun. It's for the song Matter of Time, the one that mountain dew helped put out. This past summer I drank a bunch of mountain dew, so by default that means I contributed to the budget."

Cool! We can't wait to see it!
