Golden Boys

Everybody's favorite local radio station, The Current, made a big announcement this morning: "We're proud to announce the line-up of our fifth anniversary party happening on January 29 at First Avenue. Members will get an early chance to get tickets to see Solid Gold, P.O.S., Mason Jennings, Lookbook, and Twilight Hours." We were excited to see a few of our local favorites on the same rooster, which was a general opinion on Twitter this morning. However, @solace (AKA Kyle Matteson from More Cowbell) raised a legit concern:

The post generated a few responses where people mostly agreed with his opinion:
What do you think?? Solid Gold over P.O.S.?

  2. Whatevs, Solid Gold has the biggest buzz at the moment and The Current knows they'll pack the house more than any other act, including P.O.S. and Mason Jennings. It's not about tried and true, it's about who can bring in the biggest crowd, and Solid Gold sold out First Avenue last time around on a headlining show.

  3. Jahna, I disagree about buzz -- P.O.S. has gotten WAY more national buzz than Solid Gold. But locally, I think you may be right about Solid Gold bringing in the MPR listener crowd. -Kate

  4. It's pretty awesome that they have3 bands each of which could pull off headlining the night

  5. It looks to me like the Current put together a fun event and decided to have Solid Gold close the night though that doesn't necessarily mean they're headlining the event.

And for what it's worth, P.O.S. and Mason can very easily sell out First Ave.

  6. True, true. That said, everyone better snap up their tix asap!

  7. Disagree with Kyle...it's not lame, it's just a programming decision. Somebody had to go last. With these three to choose from, it'd be a wicked hard decision...and I have to say I agree with the one that was made, from a crowd-energy perspective. Should be a great show.

  8. First of al, set order has zero to do with who is higher up on the 'cool' ladder, and more to do with the logistics of the evening. Solid Gold is ending the night? Pretty obvious it's cos they're big with the kids and they want to get the ass shaking back on track for the dancing/boozing post stage show. The older contingent doesn't give a fuck about them, so give em their Twilight Hours and Mason Jennings so they can go home and let the kids get their freak on.

  9. Haha, I have to go with MplsDice on this one since she is the only actual expert on the subject. Any one of those bands could handily sell out First Ave. and has done on several occasions - some more than others. I think its definitely more of a flow thing. It will certainly be packed all night.

  10. by "lame" i didn't mean the show itself was lame, just felt a bit undeserved is all i guess.

i have no real ill will towards Solid Gold, they put on a pretty fun live show, but as Mpls Dice pointed out, Mason & Stef have been selling out the mainroom for quite a while now.

but yeah, i realize 2009 (although i'd argue they had more buzz last year) has been a big year for Solid Gold locally. hopefully 2010 will be the year they break out a bit/tour more nationally.

i'll be attending the show for sure, no question, and i now realize the reason why they were chosen was as someone from 89.3 put it "it's a party", and clearly they're the dancier group of those 3 (although in that case i'd argue for Lookbook being later too ;).

  11. and i also put "headline" in quotes in my tweet because as many others here pointed out, all 3 of those acts could be considered headliners

  12. I think it looks like an amazing show, multiple top-drawer Mpls headliners all at once. As soon as I get a paycheck I'll renew my MPR membership.

  13. jahna must be joking. RIGHT JAHNA?!?!
biggest buzz? not even remotely close.
biggest crowd? POS and Mason have been selling out the mainroom for YEARS. solid gold have done it once. love em, but they're definitely the little guys in this line up. either way, i can't wait. this will be a total blast!
