CONvergence Tweet Roundup

Annual geekfest, CONvergence, kicked off Thursday and nerds are already going crazy on Twitter. We've rounded up a few highlights thus far, and we expect (no, we KNOW) that things will only get more outrageous throughout the rest of the weekend. Follow the hashtag #CVG2011 to keep up with all the hilarious shenanigans.

Jeremy Messersmith reporting live from CONvergence!

Jeremy Messersmith here with a report from CONvergence. I'll be working this weekend as a l'etoile Magazine correspondent. The main fashion event, The Masquerade, is being held later this evening at 7pm, but I thought a few photos might give you a taste of what the biggest sci-fi convention in the midwest is like:

It's common to see lovingly crafted costumes, and people posing for several minutes so everyone can take snapshots.

There are all sorts of parties, panels and clubs at CONvergence, some delve deep into sci fi theology.

Steam punk equals 1 part Victorian attire, 1 part goggles, and 1 part HUGE GUNS.

Culinary fans will also find CONvergence a source of unorthodox food choices...most of the served on toast.

I chose nutella, marshmallow creme and banana. It may not look like much, but it was delish.

There are flyers everywhere for different events, but I zeroed in on this one by local sci-fi writer/Jagercon regular Rob Callahan.

Local cake decorator impresses Wesley Crusher

Monday night, nerds descended on the Guthrie Theater in droves for W00tstock, a geek-friendly variety show featuring Adam Savage of Mythbusters, Wil Wheaton (also known as Wesley Crusher from Star Trek the Next Generation) and a slew of other notable nerds.

Local cake decorator, Marie Porter of Celebration Generation, made sure they all had a warm welcome in the form of a Doctor Who Tardis cake (ie-the blue telephone booth thingy Dr. Who travels around in). You may remember the accomplished cake designer from this previous post or from her decorating talents featured in l'etoile's Kiss Me, Cake photo editorial. Long story short, Marie totally rocks!

Just this morning she posted a number of backstage pix from W00tstock on her Facebook fan page that we're totally jealous of! Wesley Crusher AND Neil Gaiman? Scream!

We missed MarsCon, dammit.

We really like sci-fi conventions. They are hilarious and the most fun EVER. We had to miss this past weekend's MarsCon, but luckily some of our pals who went snapped pictures of the outrageously nerdy affair.
