First Ave now on Tumblr

First Avenue, everybody's favorite concert venue, continues evolving in the digital space. Several weeks ago they unleashed the mobile app and just today they announced they were joining Tumblr as well:

New Blog Alert

Local writer/journalist Molly Priesmeyer has a new Tumblr blog that you should know about. It's called Tiny Yurt and it's going to be a place for this prolific writer to.. well... write! The first post, published just this morning is a story of a guy named Shit Charlie. See, it's already good.

"Charlie didn’t call himself “Shit Charlie.” But he might as well have. Charlie fancied himself a superhero who could make bad things magically disappear. “Did they tell you about me?” he asked, his Texas drawl so thick it could hang suspended in midair all by itself, like paper strands of DNA. “If you crap anywhere in Northern Honduras. And I mean ANYWHERE. I’m the guy in charge of getting rid of it."

Viral link of the day: the Who Is Arcade Fire? Tumblr, which popped up after Arcade Fire won "Album of the Year" last night at the Grammys. We'll reach for a local connection: some peeps are mistaking the band's name for their album, The Suburbs.


The Suburbs were an iconic Minneapolis new wave band of the '80s, young one.

Minnesota named #49 in GQ's "50 Worst States in America"

GQ Magazine put out a LOL-worthy list yesterday entitled "The 50 Worst States in America" and Minnesota came in at an impressive #49. Not bad! The mag says:

The average Minnesotan seems to get more regular exercise than the average American... because the average Minnesotan burns about six billion calories just scraping the ice off his windshield every morning. Despite soul-killing winters and the constantly audible drone of Garrison Keillor in the background, the Gopher State consistently tops lists of most desirable places to live. Course, Minnesotans also get more colonoscopies than the average American, once again proving the axiom: No matter where you live, someone's always up your ass.

35W Bridge Art?

Browsing the local Tumblrs this morning we ran into an interesting post at Karl Pearson-Cater's blog where he suggests a great idea: Minnesota artists should create art out of the wreckage for a 35W memorial. He thinks " The Walker or other local artists and Mayor R.T. Rybak could get this done" and we could not agree more.

Karl's post contains quotes from Steve Berg's article published over at Minn Post, where he suggests where the memorial should be located: "My nomination for locating this stark piece of public art is an empty lot at the north end of the bridge, at University and 10th Avenue S.E.".

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, as expected, has already thought of this idea himself. The Mayor has been working on the memorial site idea with the city's Park Board, MnDOT officials and the families of victims; the site should be located across West River Road near 11th Avenue South.

Berg's article also adds that: "Specifics could be announced as early as next week. The new site, if officially selected, may lend itself to a more linear design with an overlook of the river and the new bridge. Tom Oslund, principal of the Minneapolis landscape architecture firm Oslund and Associates, will design the memorial."

Bye Bye Oak Street

This just in, vis Stuff About Minneapolis Tumblr : Oak Street Cinema is officially closing its doors to the public. Star Tribune reported several weeks ago that the cinema "is expected to be sold after the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival ends May 3." It appears that the local fire department paid them a visit in the meantime: this sign was spotted at the front door of the beloved movie theater saying the building is "unsafe" and that it needs to be vacated immediately.

Oak Street is (or was, at this point) a favorite destination for local movie buffs, since their repertoire included not only classic American films, but also a variety of foreign flicks and cult favorites. It is undoubtedly a sad affair, as one commenter says on Tumblr: "place that turned me into a pretentious film studies minor. Sad times."

Minneapolis Gay Boy Band?

Yes, you read that right: there's an audition happening for Minneapolis' first ever gay boy band. Thanks to Taylor over at Mediation Tumblr we've learned about a Craigslist ad posted April 24th saying:

"Okay, we've all heard of boy bands. We've all heard of gay boys in boy bands. But what about an entire boy band of gay boys. I know a couple of things, Minneapolis has talent and it definitely has gays. If you've ever been interested in starting a gay boy band or being in one, come to the audition and we'll see what we can come up with. Auditioning for two more members of the band. The audition will be American Idol style. You come a with a prepared song or two and we let you know if you've made it to the callback right away. THIS IS SERIOUS. Our goal is to put together a show that will start out traveling to different venues around the TWIN CITIES and grow from there. We will likely start out doing covers, but will eventually graduate to original songs. Looking for guys with good voices, the ability to harmonize, and who can move (no need to be a professional dancer but some skills are required. Song writers are a plus. "

Despite obvious spelling mistakes in the ad, we tend to think this is for real. And we personally know plenty of sassy gays who would be perfect! If interested, audition will be held at Rumours/Innuendo in St. Paul on Friday May 14th.
