Sunday Night Dance Party returns to 1st Ave

If you're like us, you came of age in the early '90s. And what was the "scene" for underagers back in those days? Sunday Night Dance Party at 1st Avenue, of course! The all ages dance night introduced us to a whole world of cool music and cool peeps - and got us into plenty of fun trouble (and no, we won't tell you the stories!). Before the internet took hold of our social calendars (and before we were actually allowed into bars) it was all about what was on that xeroxed monthly 1st Ave flier.

DJs Jonathan Ackerman and Travis Stearns of the Moongoons recently posted a Facebook event declaring the triumphant return of the night (though no word on if it's just a one-off or an ongoing thing yet). A while we're obviously too old to enjoy such a thing (at least not without seeming creepy) we still give props to the boys for resurrecting such a fun, nostalgic event!

The quintessential Twin Cities dance party is returning to the Mainroom! Back by popular demand, on Sunday, September 26, The Moongoons, PD Spinlove, Mike 2600, Plain Ole Bill, Famuel, Soviet Panda, The Stay Spun and more will pick up right where the legendary night left off. Dust off those dancing shoes, it time again to turn Sunday night into the ultimate dance party.

Jake Rudh makes the semi-finals in the "Mad Men" contest

It happened! For the second year running, local contestant and DJ about town Jake Rudh has made it to the semi-finals of AMC's "Mad Men" contest. Unfortunately, Jessa Alt - who had a good fighting chance until she was questionably eliminated, didn't get enough votes in her second attempt to make it into the Top 10.


Jake had this to say on his Facebook page: "If I could say thank you 14,448 times I would. It's in the hands of Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner now. I really can't thank the hundreds of you who voted everyday enough. To the rest of you, thank you for putting up with all of the posts. It really was a necessary evil, and I'm glad most of you saw it that way. I'...m going to go take a nap now...then have a cocktail and go celebrate with the wife. Thank you again!"

Congrats, Jake! Let's cross our fingers and hope the producers give him a shot!

Blue Sky Blackout song featured on ABC Family show

LOL/OMG! faves Blue Sky Blackout, who kicked off our LOL/OMG! meetup series this summer in style, was on TV! Or at least their music was. The band's rockin' song "Somebody Said That You Loved Me" was featured on the most recent episode of ABC Family gymnastics-themed drama Make It Or Break It. The full episode can be viewed HERE (though the link appears to be down at the moment).


The guys say via their Facebook page, "When you think about girls' gymnastics, think about Blue Sky Blackout. As featured in S2 E10 of ABC Family's Make It Or Break It!"

The ABC Family website also is streaming the full song for your aural pleasure.

Not sure what you're doin' for lunch today? Have an extra hour or so to wait in a long line of cheapskates to score a $1 sandwich? Well, if so, head to numerous Jimmy John's locations today for Customer Appreciation Day from 11am-3pm and get any 8 inch sub for $1. We're not sure it'll be worth the hassle because everyone and their mom is tweeting/facebooking about it, but hey, a cheap sandwich is a cheap sandwich. Limit one per customer per location.

UPDATE: This is apparently a union-busting effort (thanks for the tip anonymous commenter) local Jimmy John's employees are unionizing AND on strike:

MINNEAPOLIS– Sandwich workers at nine Minneapolis Jimmy John's locations made history this morning as they filed for the first-ever National Labor Relations Board union election at the national fast food chain. If a majority of workers vote in favor of unionization, franchise owner Mike Mulligan will be legally bound to negotiate with a bargaining team elected by his employees.

And in other Gayngs-related news...

In case there are still those who believe a Prince impostor was at the Gayngs concert a few months ago, here's the proof the Purple One was indeed there. Pitchfork just posted a Gayngs concert video with this description:

"Recorded at a prom themed Minneapolis release party in May, this performance clip for slow jam mavens Gayngs' "The Last Prom on Earth" is highlighted by a special appearance from none other than Prince himself. While the clip captures the Purple One nodding his bowler cap in the wings with a guitar slung around his shoulder (pictured above), he doesn't actually come up to play with the band. Which is a shame, because this song is ripe for a "Purple Rain"-style solo."
