Copycats...or not?

A little birdie told us today that there may be yet another music feud on the horizon. Here's the scoop: Hilarious/awesome local dance/party duo Koo Koo Kanga Roo put out a music video for their song "Lava Tag" last September. Skip forward three months and guess what? Just today, Minneapolis pop-rockers, Motion City Soundtrack dropped their newest video that strangely resembles the one Koo Koo Kanga Roo released three months ago.

We are just going to point out a few obvious similarities:

-kids science fair theme
-heavily featured volcano science fair projects
-trashing science fair scene
-band members win science fair
-weirdly lit group dance scene with kids in gymnasium

What do you guys think? Is there something shady going on here or could this be a pure coincidence?

Here are both videos, for comparison:

This calls to mind certain specific similarities between Jessica Simpson's "A Public Affair" video and a 48 Hour Film made by then-local film maker Darren Roark from a few years ago.

  2. the best part is that the MCS video has absolutely nothing to do with the song, which has some sort of vague plot (so unlike emo music). this is only the start of people copying koo koo's creativity!

  3. LOL! OMG! Do I spy Clement and Nadine in the Darren Roark vid?

  4. Yes, totally Clement and Nadine...and Mike Gunther is the DJ. Cat Campion as the main bitch. I think Croix is in there too wearing short shorts. I fainted pulling '80s wardrobe for that 48 hour film. lol.

  5. This is crazy! I'm going to go ahead and say that if this wasn't "copied" it was definitely strongly influenced by Koo Koo's "Lava Tag"

  6. i can't think of a single local band that blows harder than motion city soundtrack. isn't mall rock dead yet?

  7. mcs didn't even think up the idea. the director did. i am doubting a famous director who isn't from minnesota would even know who a little local band is and steal their video, let alone watch it. comical.

  8. Well, it's pretty common for production companies/directors to troll the internet for inspiration -- YouTube being a prime source. So it really isn't that far fetched that some elements were ripped from the Koo Koo Kang Roo vid. The similarities between the two could be a very strange coincidence of course, but who knows. It's a very unusual concept, and the gymnasium dance scene is so, so similar...

  9. Big named D.C. culture bloggers Brightest Young Things chimed in and gave this post a link here: http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/misc-awesome/weekend-link-roundup3/

They are team Koo Koo Kanga Roo, in case you were wondering.
